摘要
Whisker-reinforced ceramics showing enhanced fracture toughness are very interesting materials for structural applications. The fabrication of these materials, however, is critical as inhalation of the needle-shaped whiskers is hazardous to health. Instead of toxic whiskers, platelets can be used as fracture-deflecting and bridging components. This report informs about the reinforcing potential of platelets based on theoretical calculations and results obtained from experiments.
