The phenomenon of dispersion in optical fibers limits the transmission rate and the length of the regeneration sections of optical-fiber transmission systems, for a given reliability. A considerable improvement in these characteristics can be obtained by using nonlinearity effects. The simultaneous occurrence of nonlinearity and dispersion enables one, under certain conditions, to generate pulses in the optical fiber with envelopes which retain their form as they propagate along the fiber. Such pulses have been called solitons, and transmission systems that use them are called soliton optical-fiber transmission systems [1, 2]. In this paper we consider the problem of estimating the main characteristics of such systems, namely, the noise immunity and transmission rate of soliton optical-fiber transmission systems, taking into account the features of the propagation of solitons along optical fibers.
