Medical care of refugees and asylum seekers - experiences from the "Wurzburg Model"

The care for refugees and asylum seekers is medically challenging and difficult because of cultural and legal hurdles. Since 2008 we have gained experience with a project of low barrier medical care in a large institution for asylum seekers where the local government, medical professionals and volunteers closely cooperate. This 'Wurzburg model' could serve as example how access to medical care can be accomplished for a particularly vulnerable group. However, our experiences also identify the limitations of the system and call for solutions in the areas of politics and the civil society.
