UPSILON(10580)-]J/PSI+X IN A COLOR HYBRID MODEL

Estimates are presented for the decay width of the inclusive process UPSILON(8) --> J/psi + X, where UPSILON(8) is a color hybrid bbgBAR of the UPSILON(4S) in which the b and bBAR quarks occupy a 1S0 color-octet state. Invoking the color evaporation hypothesis, we find that GAMMA(UPSILON(8) --> J/psi + X) less-than-or-equal-to GAMMA(UPSILON(8) --> ccgBAR) congruent-to 2.8 keV when the invariant mass of the ccBAR pair is constrained to lie below the open charm threshold of 2M(D). Suppression factors due to conversion of the ccBAR pair into J/psi and to mixing with the color-singlet state are expected to lead to an observed rate for UPSILON(10580) --> J/psi + X that is comparable to GAMMA(UPSILON(1S) --> J/psi + X) congruent-to 60 eV, and thus consistent with experimental bounds on the non-BBBAR decay modes of the UPSILON(10580).
