Maxillary odontogenic myxoma: case report and literature review

OBJECTIVES. The aim of this study is to present a case of maxillary odontogenic myxoma, a rare benign tumor accounting for less than 0.5% of bone tumors, and a review of the literature on the subject. MATERIALS AND METHODS. A Caucasian woman, 44 years old, presented with a radiotransparent bilobed lesion of around 40 mm in maximum dimension in her left upper maxilla, with no clear dental involvement. The mass was surgically resected. A review of the literature was also carried out to investigate disputes regarding the histopathological origins, surgical management and differential diagnosis of this disease. RESULTS AND CONCLUSIONS. A histopathological examination of the lesion was necessary to achieve the right diagnosis, whereas clinical and radiological evidence of odontogenic myxoma was not confirmatory. The thorough literature review conducted on this topic confirmed that surgery, associated to strict follow-up, proves to be the most appropriate treatment.
