THE INFLUENCE OF SUBSTITUTION OF TH ON THE SUPERCONDUCTING BEHAVIOR OF YBA2CU4O8

It is shown that up to 10 at% of Y in YBa2Cu4O8 (T(c) = 80 K) can be replaced with Th. DC magnetization and AC magnetic susceptibility measurements showed that the T(c onset) is 50 K for Y0.9Th0.1Ba2Cu4O8, although the zero-resistance state is obtained only at 24 K. The deleterious influence of Th4+-substitution on the superconducting behaviour of YBa2Cu4O8 is discussed in the light of corresponding data obtained upon substituting equivalent amounts of Ce4+ and Ca2+ in YBa2Cu4O8.
