Factor analysis of social attitudes in different countries and cultures has revealed replicable patterns underlying specific attitudes and beliefs. In order to examine the structure of social attitudes in Catalonia, the Wilson-Patterson Attitude Inventory (WPAI) was administered to a sample of 185 Catalan university students. Principal components analysis of the Catalan version of the WPAI revealed the existence of a general conservatism dimension superimposed upon several more specific content factors, consistent with results found in other countries. Sex differences in social attitudes were also similar to previous findings, with women emerging as more conventional and caring and men more permissive yet punitive. © 1990.
