CONSOLIDATION IN THE EAST-GERMANY POTATO ECONOMY

The adaption to conditions of a market economy in East Germany resulted in a considerable reduction of the potato acreage and of potato production. Stabilisation of production is reached on a comparatively low level. Potato consumption in West and East Germany shows great differences, but is becomming increasingly similar, The construction of the potato processing industry makes progress and gives reason for an optimistic view of the future. West-German and West-European companies are heavily engaged in the process of restructuring the industry.
