EARLY TREATMENT OF CONGENITAL STRABISMUS

Pediatricians are referring patients with congenital strabismus to specialized centers increasingly early. At the Montreuil Hospital, 13 patients evaluated for esotropia before the age of six weeks were studied. Management consisted of use of glasses with medial patches, abduction exercices, and close monitoring. There was a high level of motivation and compliance among parents. Eleven of the 13 patients were orthophoric by about four months of age. They are now between two and three years of age and exhibit binocular vision during stereoscopic testing. Early management (before two months of age) of congenital strabismus should be recommended.
