THE ROLE OF MANAGEMENT AGREEMENTS IN RURAL ENVIRONMENTAL CONSERVATION

This article considers the use of management agreements, as defined in the Wildlife and Countryside Act (1981), to achieve conservation in the countryside. Reference is made to experience gained in the Peak District National Park from 1981 to the present. Compensatory payments (for loss of income) and payments for conservation achievements (payment by results) are contrasted.
