摘要
Aim: To investigate the effect of erdosteine, an antioxidant agent, on free oxygen radicals and their plasma values in an animal model of sepsis. Methods: 30 Sprague-Dawley rats, weighing between 180 and 200 grams were divided into 3 groups. Group I (Sham), Group II (Sepsis), and Group III (Sepsis + Erdosteine 20 mg/kg/day). Sepsis was created by caecum ligation and perforation. Erdosteine was administered at 0 and 12 hours. Blood samples were drawn at 24 hours and erythrocyte glutathion (GSH) and serum tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-alpha) were measured. After the animals were sacrificed, histopathological examination and measurement of tissue malondialdehyde (MDA) was performed on lung, liver, and kidney tissue samples. Results: TNF-alpha and erythrocyte GSH values were not significantly different between groups (p>0.05). Kidney and liver MDA levels did not statistically differ between groups (p>0.05). Histopathological examination of lung, liver, and kidney tissues found no difference between groups (p>0.05). Conclusion: Erdosteine was ineffective in this experimental sepsis model. Further studies are required to determine the possible useful effects of erdosteine.
