WHAT KINDS OF LITERACY ARE NEEDED FOR THE 21st CENTURY

In the 21st century, societies face growing needs for well-developed literacy amidst the inability of educational systems to meet such needs. New requirements resulting from technological advancements and increasing challenges of multilingual encounters in intercultural contexts call for better knowledge of various forms of literacy, ranging from basic and digital through complex multilingual and intercultural. Various forms of literacy become analysable when viewed as language activities and communicative performance. The ability to use such literacy critically, however, necessitates fully developed language awareness and the capacity to monitor language choices.
