Patient self-reports underestimate alcohol intake in a sizable population. Availability of specific and sensitive biochemical markers to screen alcohol abuse,assessing chronic consumption, and monitoring abstinence is currently limited. The clinical utility, specificity, and sensitivity of currently available biochemical markers to corroborate the history of excessive alcohol consumption, and usefulness in the diagnosis of alcoholism is discussed.
