摘要
In contrast to caries, the prevalence of periodontitis is continually increasing. Since over 70% of adult patients suffer from periodontal problems with loss of periodontal attachment, this fact must be considered in orthodontic treatment of adults and identified in time to prevent further periodontal damage. An adequate therapy, however, cannot be provided by either the orthodontist or periodontologist on his/her own, but requires a coordinated approach within an interdisciplinary health team to achieve therapy results, which can be considered successful in the long term. The present review article provides a compilation of known correlations between dysgnathia and periodontal problems as well as the consequences of chronic periodontal disease relevant for orthodontists. In addition, the advantages and possibilites of orthodontic therapy-within the periodontally challenged dentition are presented for typical clinical situations, -taking into account regenerative procedures (GTR), and a valid and systematic treatment approach is detailed.
