Transient stability of a system transferring power through a long EHV AC transmission line with various series and shunt compensation schemes is determined and compared. The general 2-port, 4-terminal network model of a transmission line and compensation is used. The extended equal area criterion is reformulated in terms of the ABCD constants rather than the transfer admittance to determine the critical clearing angle. The critical clearing time is then determined by estimating the faulted angle through the Taylor series expansion. Effects of various factors, such as degree of series and shunt compensations, line length and the load power and power factor, on transient stability are studied. A comparison of critical clearing time for different transmission line models (distributed and lumped parameters) is also made.
