SITE-SPECIFIC DIFFERENCES IN THE UPTAKE INVIVO OF 2-DEOXYGLUCOSE BY ADIPOSE-TISSUE IN THE DJUNGARIAN HAMSTER, PHODOPUS-SUNGORUS

2-deoxy[1-H-3]glucose was administered orally to fasting adult hamsters. The uptake of label into 10 different adipose depots was measured, and compared with previous data on the maximum activities of hexokinase in the same tissues. Significantly more 2-deoxyglucose was taken up by intermuscular, mesenteric and cardiac depots, but the overall correlation with hexokinase activity in the same sites was weak. We conclude that glycolytic enzyme activity is modulated in vivo, probably by hormones; modulation is site-specific and is not directly related to the maximum activities of the enzymes.
