摘要：
The article has defined the general features of liminality' viewed as a particular condition of a person and a society. The author has also concludes that the socio-cultural quality of 'liminality' could acquire various degrees of maturity and historical stability. The concept of 'liminal situation' is differentiated from that of 'liminal' civilization' on the basis of the above mentioned criteria. The article demonstrates the historical stages in the development of the main types of civilizational 'liminality'.
