SUSTAINABLE TOURISM DEVELOPMENT AND MARINE CONSERVATION REGIMES

This paper presents an argument in favor of utilizing marine conservation regimes for managing and controlling tourism in coastal and marine areas. Tourism is identified as having both positive and negative effects on natural environments. One of the primary benefits of using marine conservation regimes as management tools is that the typology of conservation regimes enables governments to choose a combination of preservation and development principles that reflects an area's capacity for tourism and the preferences of the nearby communities. Emphasis on community participation in the planning process is regarded as an advantage to ensuring successful management of the marine convervation area.
