Holography-based methods have recently been proposed by the author for the solution of crystal structures in x-ray crystallography. Similar methods are proposed here for the solution of surface structures from low-energy-electron-diffraction (LEED), diffuse LEED, and electron-emission holograms. Our derivation highlights the close connection between the recovery of sur-face structures and the inverse problem of holography. Our methods may extend and simplify the use of existing algorithms for the solution of surface structures. They may eliminate many of the artifacts found in existing methods, including twin images.
