摘要
Inhomogeneous magnetic fields are fundamental to particle confinement in storage rings and fusion machines. An elementary discussion of single particle motion in these fields is presented and the different approaches specific to each situation, the orbit stability and the drift approximation, are pointed out. A comparison of both confinement schemes, however, also reveals several common features, such as the presence of Arnold diffusion with its deteriorating property in both cases.
