THE CHALLENGES OF HIGHER EDUCATION IN COLOMBIA: A REFLECTION ON THE PHENOMENON OF UNIVERSITY DEVELOPMENT

Higher education faces changes associated to its educational mission in society. These changes are expressed in a very particular situation, student desertion. In Colombia, access to higher education, in recent decades, is the globalization trend, it means, a generalization of economic policies routed by the State that would finance function of different layers college population. However, it contrasts with the obvious fact and also a problem of high rates of students who fail to successfully complete their education. Student desertion is a symptom of educational problem at the structural level, related to social conditions in which educational discourse is generated not only from higher education institutions, but also, from students.
