摘要
Much recent work in the social sciences has focused on the 'informalization' of the economy in the West - from the reduction of the welfare component of the state, to increases in homework, networking within industrial districts and so on. Taking selected vignettes from his work in Spain for the purposes of illustration, the author argues that orthodox sociological concepts designed for the study of the mass collective worker and rational citizen in an institutionally compartmentalized modern society can be misleading when applied to these 'idiosyncratic' kinds of livelihood. He makes some tentative suggestions towards a more sensitive ethnographic method for their study.
