Carbide layer on Ni(111) surface and that on Ni(100) surface (p4g) take the same arrangement of carbon atoms, and the carbide layer on Ni(111), Ni(100) and Ni(110) surfaces undergoes the decomposition at the same temperature, 685 K. These results indicate the formation of the same compound on these surfaces, which may be responsible to the structure insensitive methanation reaction on nickel catalyst.
