摘要
The dynamics of the formation of the glue droplets on the spiral capture threads of orb spiders is studied theoretically, and the predictions confirmed experimentally. They are dominated by a dynamic equilibrium between water in the glue and the water vapour in the air. Much of the water in the glue is extracted from the air, and the ingestion of the web forms a significant contribution to the daily water intake by the spider. The adhesive properties of the capture thread are much enhanced by droplet formation.
