Territories of Servitude and Territories of Freedom in Brazil

摘要：
This article shows how Servitude shaped Brazilian territory, through colonial history and slavery which left a legacy in the social and spatial practices of today. It presents the shelter-territories of the runaway slaves - the quilombos - as well as some religious practices as acts of resistance to oppression. Finally, it analyses some places which are iconic for the ongoing struggles against modern forms of dependency and sees in the emergence of a public space, both literally and metaphorically, a democratic victory.
