ANTIBIOTIC PROPHYLAXIS IN TRANSRECTAL ULTRASOUND GUIDED PROSTATE BIOPSY: COMPARISON OF TWO DIFFERENT ANTIBIOTIC SCHEMES

Introduction: The aim of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of two different prophylactic schemes for prevention to infectious complications after transrectal prostate biopsy. Materials and Methods: Between September 2004 and December 2006, a total of 244 patients, who underwent prostate biopsy due to elevated PSA and/or suspicious finding in rectal examination, were included in this study. While ciprofloxacin plus ornidazole was given in the first 104 patients (Group 1); ceftriaxone plus ornidazole were given in the remaining 140 patients (Group 2) for prophylaxis. Results: A total of 19 infectious complications were found (14 in group 1 and 5 in group 2). Number of infectious complications in group 1 was found higher than group 2 (p=0.02). However, there was no statistically significant difference found between two groups in other complications (p>0.05). Conclusion: On the light of our findings, ceftriaxone plus ornidazole scheme is more effective in prevention of infectious complications after prostate biopsy when compared to ciprofloxacin plus ornidazole scheme.
