摘要
Introduction. Internship supervising is a key to the professional training of General Practitioners (GPs) in France. Specific lectures about supervision in GP conducted by the National College of GPs have an official accreditation and are to be evaluated, to improve the aims for the participants. The aim of the study was to describe the motivations for GPs to become GP trainee supervisors and secondly improve the existing lecture. Methods. Mixed method study using an exploratory sequential design about 20 lectures with 390 participants between June 2013 and June 2014. Collected data were qualitative (the three main motivations for GPs on an online questionnaire) and quantitative (main characteristics: age, gender, duration of practice, group or individual practice, rural or urban location). A thematic analysis was conducted. Main codes and categories were cross referenced with main characteristics with the Nvivo10 (c) matrix coding function and followed with a univariate analysis to look for association between codes and characteristics. Results. Sharing experiences, personal interests (burn out prevention, improving their knowledge, challenging themselves, finding replacements or association) and collective interests (fighting against the decrease of healthcare access) were the most frequent motivations written by GPs. Looking for replacements or succession was associated with a longer duration of practice, and more often for GPs working in rural areas. Challenging and improving their knowledge was more frequent in GPs with a short duration of practice, whereas sharing experiences in particularly about day to day practice was more frequent in GPs with a long duration of practice. Discussion. The main aims of the lecture about GP trainee supervision must be built on the core competencies of general practice and must recognize the type of practice of GPs.
