WHAT DO WE REALLY WANT FROM SCHOOLS

The “revolution” in education is just beginning and it is useful to recall the experience of recent attempts to reform the schools. The latest school reform that has been announced is not the first in our educational system. There were attempts to reorganize it in 1953 and in 1961. (The same slogans as today, the same dreams, the same craving to “link the schools to life”-there's another remarkable metaphor, incidentally! We will return to it.)
