MOBILITY AND OXIDATION OF BORON IN FE-B AND FE-NI-B GLASSES

Ultrafine particles of iron alloys are pyrophoric and must be passivated so as to form an outer oxide layer before being exposed to air. It is found that during annealing of amorphous Fe-B alloys, boron diffuses to the passivation layer, where it reacts with oxygen and may reduce the iron oxides. Hence, the metallic cores of such alloys become depleted of boron. Once boron has been segregated in this way it may also be lost from the sample by fusing with quartz annealing vessels. These changes in composition may affect the stability of the amorphous phase, and change the general properties of the alloy.
