EFFECT OF WEED AND FERTILIZER MANAGEMENT ON NUTRIENT-UPTAKE BY WEEDS AND MAIZE (ZEA-MAYS L) UNDER RAIN-FED CONDITIONS

Field experiment was conducted during kharif 1984 and 1985 at the Research Farm of Department of Agronomy and Agro-meterology, HPKV, College of Agriculture, Solan. Pre-emergence application of pendimethalin 1.5 kg a.i./ha resulted in comparatively higher maize yield and uptake of N, P and K followed by handweeding twice and pre- + post-emergence combination of atrazine and glyphosate. Handweeding treatments recorded less weed dry weight and therefore, less removal of nutrients as compared to the application of herbicides. There was no significant increase in grain yield by the application of extra fertilizers over recommended dose but nutrient uptake by maize and weeds increased upto highest fertility level.
