Resection of intrathoracic thyroid gland. Case report

The intrathoracic goiter is diagnosed today with low frequency. However, they have to be taken as a diagnostic possibility in the presence of a mass located in the antero-superior mediastinal compartment or medium. The purpose of this study is to describe the case of a patient who presented with symptoms of dry cough of three months of evolution. The chest X-ray imaging and CAT show a dense homogeneous shadow located in the antero-superior mediastinal compartment suggestive of ectopic thyroid. Extrinsic compression. The gammagraphy with 99 Tc shows no nodule in right lobe. The values of total thyroxin (T3) and T4, free thyroxin 3 (T3) and T4 and TSH were normal. Due to suspicion of malignancy, surgery was indicated, with total thyroidectomy. The postoperative course was satisfactory without complications. The histopathological examination of the resected part confirmed the diagnosis of benign thyroid adenoma.
