A key is presented to describe stages of development and growth of the potato (Solanum tuberosum L.). The code is divided into seven principal stages: seed germination and emergence, tuber dormancy, tuber sprouting, emergence and shoot expansion, flowering, tuber development, and senescence. Each of these is subdivided into secondary stages. Flowering and tuber development stages can be concurrent with the other stages to enable the separate description of the development of these organs. The practical uses of the key are discussed.
