HYPERVALENT SPECIES OF PHOSPHORUS - SYNTHESIS AND CHARACTERIZATION

Phosphoranylation of o-substituted benzenes with PCl5, at elevated temperature results in the isolation of five- and six-membered spirobicyclic phosphoranes, in which the penta-coordinate phosphorus, besides being bonded to heteroatoms other than oxygen, also possesses a P-X(X = Cl) bond which undergoes substitution reactions. Such reactions have been utilised to prepare some novel spirobicyclic organophosphoranes containing a peptide linkage. These have been characterised by NMR (P-31 and H-1), molar conductance and elemental analysis.
