摘要
The surface composition of alpha-Mn3O4, with a tetragonally distorted normal spinel structure, has been investigated by means of adsorbed carbon monoxide. The surface of evacuated alpha-Mn3O4 exposes both Mn2+ and Mn3+ cations, probably in threefold and fourfold coordination by oxygen ions, respectively. Comparison with the energetically preferred surface of an ideal normal spinel structure indicates that the tetragonally distortion has no decisive influence on the surface structure. Furthermore, even after evacuation at 575K there are isolated and mutually interacting hydroxyl groups present at the surface of alpha-Mn3O4. The isolated hydroxyl groups are found to have rather basic surface properties.
