This paper is the first devoted to the drosophilid fauna of Sao Tome island. In forty nine localities explored, almost all at sea level along the coast, at least forty three species were collected belonging to eight genera (Cacoxenus, Leucophenga, Chymomyza, Drosophila, Microdrosophila, Mycodrosophila, Scaptomyza, and Zaprionus). Among them twenty-seven species were already described in the literature; all of them, with one exception (Zaprionus campestris) are recorded for the first time from Sao Tome island (six species of Leucophenga, eighteen of Drosophila, one of Microdrosophila and one of Zaprionus). Preliminary data on geographical distribution of species, as well as data on their feeding and breeding substrates are also given.
