摘要
The mechanical strength of abraded silica glass was increased by more than 200% by a saturated water vapor treatment at 250-degrees-C for 4 days. Fatigue resistance of the glass also improved with the treatment. The apparent flaw size estimated by optical microscopy remained unchanged. These features can be explained in terms of the crack tip blunting caused by dissolution and re-precipitation of silica glass assisted by capillary condensation of water near the crack tip, or by viscous flow of the glass containing water.
