THE AMERICAN-VACUUM-SOCIETY AND THE PEOPLE WHO HAVE GUIDED ITS DEVELOPMENT

As part of the celebration of the first forty years of the American Vacuum Society, a short history Of the society has been written, D. m. singleton, History of Vacuum Science and Technology (AIP Press, New York, 1993), Vol. 2, p. 1), which provides a detailed account of the Society's development. The present brief article constitutes an attempt to understand the profound effect that individual members of the society have had upon this development by describing a few examples.
