摘要
Darwin's theory of sexual selection is much less known that his theory of natural selection, and remained mostly ignored for more than a century. Being today one of the most productive theories in biology, it is quite interesting to understand why it remained ignored for so long. I propose that part of its initial rejection had to do with social preconceptions. But, the most likely reason for being neglected had to do with the difficulty of the concept. A considerable theoretical development with the introduction of populational thinking, already present in Darwin, with a gene-centered view of evolution, and the development of new formal tools such as game theory were needed in order to put the theory under test. Under this perspective Darwin's feat seems even more remarkable.
