摘要
This article discusses the encoding of uncompressed SDTV (Standard Definition Television) digital video according to MPEG-2 standard (ISO/IEC 13 818). Within ISO/IEC 13 818, which is documented in 10 parts, the part ISO/IEC 13818-2 defines the encoding of digital video. MPEG-2 devised a two-dimensional structure (profiles and levels) for classifying bit streams and decoders. Profiles define the tools that may be used. The MPEG-2 standards give very little information regarding the structure and operation of the encoder. It was left to device manufacturers and software developer to keep it as their own, proprietary, technology. A useful result is that there can be competition between different encoder designs which means that better designs can evolve (higher compression factor with a defined quality of television pictures). Further to is an overview of video coding according to MPEG-4 standard in which they are given the basic characteristics and differences in relation to video coding in MPEG-2 standard, and finally profiles and levels in MPEG-4 standard are mentioned.
