We show that given two lattices L(a) and L(b), related be a shear transformation, there exists a simple displacive transformation, corresponding to a periodic modulation of L(a), which transforms L(a) into L(b). We consider recently observed icosahedral twinnings in AlFeMnSi alloys and show that they are related by rotations equivalent to the product of only two such shear transformations.
