LIBRARY-OF-CONGRESS DIGITAL LIBRARY EFFORT

The Library of Congress is actively seeking gift funds to continue the digitization efforts begun five years ago by its American Memory pilot project, which has successfully digitized more than 210,000 items. The institution's Americana holdings have been chosen for digitization because of their unique and fragile condition. The library will digitize core collections in unenhanced form for dissemination at little or no cost. By the year 2000, the library expects to have digitized five million images. The Library is currently addressing copyright issues through two projects. The first is the Electronic Copyright Management System, which will allow automated copyright registration. The second is an electronic journal prototype project.
