GENDER-SPECIFIC DIFFERENCES IN TEACHING

In the "old Laender" of the FRG, the feminization of the teacher profession is not as far advanced as is often assumed. Although more than half of all teachers are in fact women, they are often only part-timers. The differences between the employment of men and women and their unequal allotment to the different school types and subjects suggest an enquiry into the following two questions: namely, 1.) whether there exist within the individual school types and subjects, too, gender-related forms of pedagogical work and 2.) whether the unequal burdening of men and women in the teaching profession does affect the manner in which they practice their work. The author tries to answer these questions on the basis of data provided by an inquiry concerning the use of media in the classroom in which about 4000 teachers (from different Laender and school types and teaching different subjects) participated.
