A REFLECTION ON THE NOTION OF AUTHENTICITY IN THE TANGO OF RIO DE LA PLATA

The notion of authenticity occupies a very important place in the Tango of Rio de la Plata. There have been judgments about the " tanguidad" of certain proposals, i. e., about their level of authenticity, since the Old Guard of tango. As part of this historical discussion, the music of Astor Piazzolla has been approached from four primary positions: the first is that its output is not tango but contemporary popular music of Buenos Aires; the second poses that his music takes us from the agony of tango to the potency of the name; the third considers that his tango is nomadic, while the last one fully defends its tanguidad. Through the breakdown of the aforementioned visions we seek to analyze their solvency, their contribution to the study of tango and applicability to new trends, and any possible complementarities that may exist between them when facing a study of the genre and its composers.
