This article discusses my experience as a biographer of Benjamin Constant (1837-1891), synthesizing and developing some communications on the subject that I've presented at scientific meetings. My relationship, as the author, with this personage pointed out problems that the History faces to explain issues linked to the individual and collective dimensions of social processes. Also, it has shown that the historian must make choices that set him free from the illusion of recovering a past life, but, also, don't dilute the knowledge about it in the subjectivity of biographer.
