MODELING INFORMATION-SYSTEMS IN BUSINESS DEVELOPMENT - ALTERNATIVE PERSPECTIVES ON BUSINESS PROCESS REENGINEERING

In this study we investigate methods for modeling information systems (ISs) as a part of business processes. This area is becoming one of the key issues in integrating IT infrastructure development with business development. Unfortunately, the majority of current IS modeling methods do not adequately address the nature, goals, structure, and role of business processes, which the IS under development is supposed to support. Thus, there is a gap between the increased need to model business process innovations and the current capabilities and mechanisms offered to accomplish this task. To improve method development for business process modeling a framework of business re-engineering methods is presented. The framework is based on the concepts of systems discipline and differentiated environmental levels of business processing. By applying the framework to a suite of selected IS development methods we position current methods and compare them with respect to their capabilities to model business processes. This lead us to suggest some directions for future research in business modeling methods.
