IDENTIFICATION SYSTEMS IN ROLL FINISHING

Continued automation of roll finishing operations has increased the need for accurate and reliable roll identification systems. The identification systems associate rolls arriving at finishing stations with data stored in the mill computer allowing the finishing system to properly wrap, label and ship the right roll to the right customer. The roll identification is further checked by measuring the roll width, diameter and weight and comparing this measured data with the data in the order entry computer file. Barcode scanning is the industry standard today. Use of radio frequency tags is undergoing limited testing.
