Assessing the environmental impacts of business has become an important issue for corporations and with the recent growth of interest in global environmental issues, the development of explicit environmental protection policies has become an essential part of corporate strategy. This article examines the environmental protection policies of the Tokyo Electric Power Company which has included environmental protection in its business strategies since the early 1970s. The author describes the environmental policy established in 1973 and the `3C' approach announced in May 1991. He also examines the present challenges and possible future directions for Tokyo Electric Power Company's environmental protection policies.
