SPATIAL MANIFESTATIONS OF RURAL-DEVELOPMENT IN NIGERIA

The paper critically examines the spatial impacts of the process of rural development on Anambra State landscape in terms of structure, size and functions of rural settlements, changing structure of rural residential buildings, and trends in the development of rural markets and motor parks. It highlights the strengths and weaknesses of the process and their planning implications for rational use of rural space. The compound housing system is advocated as an alternative to the space-consuming, resource-wasting individual unit housing system presently being adopted. © 1991 Academic Press Limited.
