A mathematical model for transients in turbine heat rate for a thermal power plant is presented. The model is based on a lumped parameter approach in which the system component time lags are coupled to reheater time lag. An experiment is described to determine this time constant. Surges in main steam and reheat flows caused by sudden load variations are examined using this model. Transients in turbine heat rate are derived from the knowledge of these surges in flows and cylinder outputs. The results of the model are presented for a single reheat condensing turbine unit of 210 MW capacity. © 1990.
