THE JAPANESE PERMANENT EMPLOYMENT SYSTEM - EMPIRICAL-FINDINGS

Using the 1975 Japanese Social Stratification and Mobility Survey work history data, the author examines the extent to which Japanese male workers stay with their first employers and how retention rates differ in sectors of the economy. Findings suggest that beside firm type, which has been widely regarded as the primary factor in determining the work career in Japan, industrial sector and occupation are also important. © 1991, SAGE PUBLICATIONS.
